The importance of proper and efficient PPE sourcing has significantly increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many acute and non-acute providers are desperately looking for quality equipment from suppliers, and it has been difficult to connect. Enter the OpenMarkets Exchange: a two-sided marketplace where healthcare suppliers and providers can collaborate to streamline the purchasing process.
VWR, an OpenMarkets’ supplier, is a leading global, independent provider of healthcare and laboratory product and service solutions. The OpenMarkets Exchange connects providers looking for innovative supply chain solutions with qualified suppliers. This led Cayuga Medical Center to get connected with VWR.
Cayuga Medical Center, located in Ithaca, New York, needed gloves and turned to OpenMarkets for help. With New York COVID-19 cases at an all-time high, they needed immediate assistance from a trusted source. Emily, a VWR sales representative, spoke with the Cayuga team and learned specifically what they needed. She then created a quote. Cayuga inquired about certain sizes and terms of delivery and the VWR rep responded promptly and even offered to check if they would be in stock earlier.
There is a national glove shortage and in December 2020, more than half of hospitals’ infection prevention specialists reported that they were wearing their N95 protective masks designed for one-time use five times or more” (LA Times). This will be a continued issue in 2021 and OpenMarkets is here to help.
COVID-19 changed how supply chain operations worked for many healthcare facilities. An issue with placing a single order only is that the stock may not be available every time, causing unnecessary stress to already overextended supply chain teams. To help ease Cayuga’s workload, after confirming availability, Emily, the VWR rep suggested that Cayuga Medical center submit a blank purchase order (PO) that could be reprocessed every time they needed more supplies. Emily worked closely with the team member to finalize what needed to be sent. After reviewing the quality of their initial order, Cayuga Medical Center followed Emily’s advice to provide a blank ended up sending a blank PO allowing the provider to order five cases of gloves per month through the summer of 2021.
With the COVID-19 situation escalating rapidly, OpenMarkets is working hard to increase efficiency of equipment purchasing and simplifying it for both the supplier and provider. Through the OpenMarkets Exchange, Cayuga Medical Center was able to connect with VWR and get their required equipment, satisfying both their short- and long-term needs.
